There are 11 days until the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon, a life-changing experience for the 27,000 runners who will be participating in the race. It is too late for you to register to run this year, but it is NOT too late to make your plans for next year. You can register online today, and if you sign up now, while it is fresh in your mind, you will also receive a 20% discount on your entry fee.

If you want to start training but are not sure where to begin, Baptist Health South Florida can help you. As the proud sponsor of Wellness Wednesdays on WSVN7, we have produced a series of interviews and tips from marathoners, medical experts and sports professionals, who will show you how to accomplish your goals and kick off the new year for a healthier, happier and more active you!

The series, which began December 13, will continue until the ING Miami Marathon on Sunday, January 27. Many of the people you will meet throughout the series are “regular” people who made a resolution to become healthy and enjoy a better lifestyle.

Thinh Tran M.D., Chief Medical & Quality Officer, Baptist HealthMeet Dr. Thinh H. Tran, Chief Medical & Quality Officer for Baptist Health South Florida.

Dr. Tran, a marathoner himself who has completed over 10 marathons, recommends that marathoners new and old follow a few simple guidelines to ensure an injury-free, exhilarating and successful run.

  • If you are new to running, find a buddy to train with or join a running club.
  • Start your training approximately three to four months before your race to allow your body to achieve its best performance.
  • Cross-train, as it is beneficial to promoting balance and strength, as well as enhancing your performance and preventing injuries.
  • Pay attention to your body.  If you have pain and it doesn’t go away, seek medical attention.
  • A couple of weeks before the race, step back on training; reduce the amount but maintain your intensity. This will allow your body to recover in time for the big day.

Follow all the above guidelines and, as Dr. Trans says, “have a good race day performance.”

See you at the ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon next year!
