Baptist Health South Florida and IBA (Ion Beam Applications), the world’s leading provider of proton therapy solutions for the treatment of cancer, signed a historic contract that will bring a proton therapy system to Miami Cancer Institute, currently under construction.

The Belgium-based IBA will equip Miami Cancer Institute with state of the art technology to offer patients the most accurate form of cancer treatment. Proton therapy is considered the gold standard for treating cancer in sensitive areas of the body as well as when treating children. The $80 million contract for combined equipment and services, including long-term operations and maintenance supplied by IBA, is part of Baptist Health’s $430 million investment in the future of care for patients at Miami Cancer Institute.

The Institute consolidates under one roof, outpatient clinical services, a dedicated cancer research facility and signature technology platforms, including the first proton therapy center in South Florida. The new facility is expected to treat its first patient with proton therapy in 2017.
