Sticking to your workout routine can be difficult while traveling. Whether you’re whisked away to a tropical island or headed on a business trip, use these six tips to stay fit, healthy and energized.

1. Check in with your daily gym. Before you travel, check to see if your hometown gym has a location in the city in which you are traveling. Check the class list and see if any of the workout sessions fall into your schedule. If you have a national membership, this is often available at no additional cost to you.

2. Book a hotel with a fitness center. Typically the hotel’s website will describe the types of machines that are available. Additionally, the front desk or concierge will have information about local jogging and hiking paths. The hotel staff will know the area best and be able to point you in the right direction.

3. Pack portable fitness. There are lots of fitness tools you can pack that don’t take up too much room in your suitcase. Try a jump rope, resistance bands, a traveling yoga mat or light dumbbells. Don’t forget comfortable clothes and your walking shoes.

4. Work out in your hotel room. You don’t need much equipment to get a short and intense workout. You can include the following exercises: push ups, jumping jack, squats, abdominal crunches and mountain climbers. Keep an elevated heart rate by resting 10 -15 seconds between exercises.

5. Walk! If you have the ability to walk around the city or walk to your business meeting, do it. It’s a great way to see the city and stay active.

6. Recruit your family. If you are traveling with family, let them know you are making the effort to be active. Their support will help keep you on track.

Remember, the key is to plan ahead and focus on your goal to keep active. Whatever you choose, have fun and enjoy your travels. And of course: If you’re starting a new exercise routine consult with your physician.
