Dragon Boat Racing Enriches Lives of Cancer Survivors (Video)

You may not have heard of dragon boat racing, but it represents a growing sisterhood of cancer survivors who revel in the sport’s physical challenges and close camaraderie.

“After a diagnosis of breast cancer, the treatments and the surgeries kind of leave us lost,” says breast cancer survivor Ms. Kim Bonomo, who is founding president and director of Save Our Sisters (SOS), DBT Inc. “We have lost our confidence, our control of our life, our passion. Dragon boating brought that all back for me.”

Kim started the dragon boat racing team in Miami 12 years ago, and has helped hundreds of women across the state. One of them is breast cancer survivor Zoraida Nolasco, M.D.

“Being a doctor, I have observed how dragon boat benefits all women,” said Dr. Nolasco, “It’s a sport which is very complete. We exercise all our body and the team exercises our spirit.”

The Miami Cancer Institute is a proud sponsor of Save Our Sisters (SOS) Miami.

“SOS Miami offers women a message of hope and support,” says Michael Zinner, M.D., the Institute’s founding CEO and executive medical director. “They encourage women to lead full and active lives in an environment that is fun and supportive.”

Kim Bonomo agrees.

“This is all thanks to the Miami Cancer Institute,” said Kim, “because of their support, we are able to reach even more women and let them get into the swing of life.”
