Mission Discovery Summer Camp
6 Week-Long sessions beginning June 15 through July 24
For kids ages 6 to 12

3..2..1… and liftoff to Mission Discovery at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.
Weeklong Summer camps designed for the explorer in every kid.
Create your own space garden, grow native plants from seed, work in the laboratory and meet our scientists, be a mangrove detective, investigate the world under a microscope, design 3d models, experience butterflies up close, and meet prehistoric plants all through scientific exploration and creative experimentation in the most beautiful classroom in Miami.
During each week-long session, campers will join in a new mission and explore the world around them.
Daily Camp Hours: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Members: $165 per week
Non Members: Price: $200 per week
Before and aftercare is available:
Before Care: 8 am-9 am
After Care: 3:30 pm-6pm
Members: $50 per week
Non Members: $65 per week
Mission 1: Exploration Living Lab (Orchid Thieves?)
June 15-19, 2020
Calling Miami’s scientific sleuths! The jewels of south Florida, our orchids, have vanished! The mystery isn’t why…but how we can help bring them back. The mission this week is to help Fairchild scientists save endangered plants. Visit the labs, meet the scientists, and learn how we can protect the world around us. Through games and hands-on exploration learn about The Million Orchid Project and how scientists at Fairchild are growing these plants from seed in the laboratory. Have an opportunity to work in our micropropagation lab, where you will learn to grow orchid seedling and learn about their unique biology.
Mission 2: Tomatoes on Mars
June 22-26, 2020
3…2…1 and lift off to a mission helping NASA scientists grow edible plants in space. By helping astronauts grow their food you will learn more about how to grow plants in extreme environments. Try your hand at making your own space recipes and even exercises like astronauts. Learn from the experts, then design your own growth chamber, and build your creation to help scientists experiment here on Earth, for plants…in…space!
Mission 3: Travel through Time
June 29- July 3, 2020
Dinosaurs are the new kids on the block when it comes to prehistoric times. We’re going even further back! Let’s all travel to 470 million years ago, during the Ordovician period where the first land plants appeared. Meet plants older than the T. Rex, through observation, exploration, and even dissection! Discover the first photosynthetic living thing under the microscope. Be part of Fairchild’s herbarium by creating pressing current plants.
Mission 4: Field Explorers
July 6-10, 2020
Our South Florida ecosystems are in danger! Your mission for this week is to protect our Miami by understanding and planting native plants. Go out into the field to explore and help preserve Florida’s Pine Rocklands, a severely endangered ecosystem. Meet the group of conservation scientists who are helping this important piece of Miami. Get hands-on practice with seed collection of native plants and use fieldwork techniques to collect field data that scientists will use in current research.
Mission 5: Plants Are Cool
July 13-17, 2020
This week, your mission is to hang out with the coolest thing in town…plants! As our global climate changes, plants are working to keep up, by keeping cool. Budding botanists will study these plants, and learn how to understand the importance of trees. Work with a scientist to collect data and create one of a kind microscope slides that allow you to see tiny stomata…an unseen powerhouse that keeps the world running! Students will also brainstorm ways to help protect our amazing planet and the plants that are helping protect us.
Mission 6: Plant Detective
July 20-24, 2020
Sleuths, we need you again! This time, there’s been a crime committed against the guardians of our coastlines…the mangroves! In this real-life scientific puzzle, help collect clues, set traps, and analyze the results to learn about the unseen bandits attacking the trees. Collect infected leaves and grow cultures in the lab to collect even more clues, before turning to the microscopes to go beyond what we can see with the naked eye and help close the case!
