Do you have a persistent sore throat, dry cough or raspy voice? You could have reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Symptoms can include classic heartburn, bloating, belching and disturbed sleep, according to Neal Rakov, M.D., a Baptist Health Medical Group gastroenterologist with Mariners Hospital and other Baptist Health South Florida facilities.

About 20 percent of the U.S population experiences some form of GERD, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

GERD can be treated with widely available medications, but mild cases may also respond to lifestyle changes that include a healthier diet and exercise for weight management.  Medications taken for other conditions could be a cause of GERD.

The Baptist Health South Florida News Team recently spoke to Dr. Rakov about GERD. Watch now.
