As the sun rises in Marathon today, Fishermen’s Community Hospital is now part of Baptist Health South Florida. The merger will improve the quality of care for residents and visitors in the Middle Keys.

For more than five decades, Fishermen’s Hospital has been dedicated to providing community health care, education and wellness services to Middle Keys residents and visitors. Since 1962, Baptist Health has also been a part of the Upper Keys community at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier.

“We are pleased to welcome Fishermen’s Community Hospital to the Baptist Health family,” said Brian E. Keeley, president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health South Florida. “Baptist Health and Fishermen’s share a common vision for improving the health of our communities with an emphasis on compassion. We look forward to continuing this work together,” Mr. Keeley added.

Located at mile marker 48.7, Fishermen’s Community Hospital opened in 1959 and is a 25-bed critical access hospital. The emergency room is open 24-hours a day and is staffed by Board-certified physicians and specially trained nurses. Other services include inpatient and outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging, lab testing and inpatient and outpatient physical and occupational therapy. The hospital offers swing bed services, which provide extended care for patients unable to care for themselves while recovering from illness or injury.

Fishermen’s Community Hospital’s physician practices are becoming part of Baptist Health Medical Group. This team of multi-specialty employed physicians has practices located in Marathon as well as Big Pine Key.
