Baptist Health South Florida Hospitals Ranked Best in Region by U.S. News & World Report

Baptist Hospital ranked #1 hospital in all of South Florida, #6 in the state; Homestead Hospital ranked #7 in South Florida, #23 in the state

U.S. News & World ReportBaptist Health South Florida is once again recognized by U.S. News and World Report for being among the best, with two hospitals on the “Best Regional Hospitals” list. Baptist Hospital ranked as the number one hospital in all of South Florida, tops among Miami-Dade, Monroe, Broward and Palm Beach County hospitals, and number six in the state of Florida.  Homestead Hospital also made the “Best Regional Hospitals” list, ranked at number seven in South Florida and number 23 in the state.

The annual rankings take into account a variety of factors, including assessments in 16 different specialties. The “Best Hospitals” rankings, which have appeared annually since 1990, recognize hospitals that excel at treating patients who need an exceptionally high level of care. U.S. News introduced a complementary set of ratings this year to evaluate hospitals in regional markets according to their performance in five more common conditions and procedures. The methodology for this year’s ranking was also changed to include a higher threshold for consideration as a high-performing hospital.

Baptist Health hospitals were recognized as high-performing in both complex care and routine care cases as well as in 10 different specialties, procedures and conditions: Ear, Nose & Throat, Geriatrics, Pulmonology, Urology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Heart Bypass Surgery, Knee Replacement Surgery, Hip Replacement Surgery, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Heart Failure.

“We are proud and honored to again be recognized for the outstanding work of our world-class physicians, nurses and staff members who continuously reach beyond the high standards Baptist Health has in place to provide the best-quality care to each patient every day,” said Brian E. Keeley, president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health. “This ranking reinforces and validates that those standards we strive hard to achieve have been met and exceeded.”

“You really can’t deliver great hospital products or great healthcare without all of the different pieces working together,” said Baptist Hospital Medical Staff President Michael Fili, M.D. “Nursing, pharmacy, physicians, administration: it really needs to be coordinated.”

“At Baptist Health, we are constantly seeking to improve our practices and provide the highest quality of care for our patients,” said Thinh Tran, M.D., MBA, corporate vice president and chief medical and quality officer. “We share best practices among our facilities and among our staff to ensure that we are doing the best for our patients as a healthcare organization. The U.S. News rankings help patients make informed decisions about their care, and we are proud to be highlighted among the best.”

Baptist Health hospitals earned more high-performing medals than any other healthcare system in the region. In addition, Baptist Health Neuroscience Center, Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute and Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute were recognized for various specialties.

Baptist Health South Florida has once again been listed among “Health Care’s Most Wired” hospitals and health systems in an annual HealthCare’s Most Wired™ survey, recently released by the American Hospital Association’s Health Forum and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). This is the 14th time Baptist Health South Florida has been named to this prestigious list.

The 2015 Most Wired™ survey and benchmarking study is a leading industry barometer measuring information technology (IT) use and adoption among hospitals nationwide. The survey of more than 741 participants, representing more than 2,213 hospitals, examined how organizations are leveraging IT to improve performance for value-based healthcare in the areas of infrastructure, business and administrative management, quality and safety, and clinical integration.

“Our information technology platform is a vital component of our organization- from our basic infrastructure to our business systems to our clinical and safety measures,” said Brian E. Keeley, president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health. “We are proud of this recognition of our commitment to use information technology as a tool to propel our organization forward and provide the best possible care for our patients.”

According to the survey, hospitals are taking more aggressive privacy and security measures to protect and safeguard patient data. Top growth areas in security among this year’s Most Wired organizations include privacy audit systems, provisioning systems, data loss prevention, single sign-on and identity management. The survey also found: • 96 percent of Most Wired organizations use intrusion detection systems compared to 85 percent of the all respondents. Privacy audit systems (94 percent) and security incident event management (93 percent) are also widely used. • 79 percent of Most Wired organizations conduct incident response exercises or tabletop tests annually, a high-level estimate of the current potential for success of a cybersecurity incident response plan, compared to 37 percent of all responding hospitals. • 83 percent of Most Wired organizations report that hospital board oversight of risk management and reduction includes cybersecurity risk.

“Congratulations to our nation’s Most Wired hospitals for harnessing the potential of information technology to improve quality care and patient safety and lower health care costs,” said Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the AHA. “At the forefront of the field, these hospitals are setting the bar for protection of patient data through discerning security measures.”

HealthCare’s Most Wired™ Survey, conducted between Jan. 15 and March 15, 2015, is published annually by Health & Hospitals Network. Detailed results of the survey and study can be found in the July issue of H&HN. For a full list of winners visit http://www.hhnmag.com.

Keeley, president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health South Florida. “Our scores signify our commitment to patients and their safety. And when combined with our recent star rankings in patient satisfaction from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), patients can be confident they are making informed decisions about where to be treated.”

Ethisphere World's Most Ethical Companies

Baptist Health South Florida announced today that the Ethisphere Institute has named it a 2015 World’s Most Ethical Company® – marking the fifth straight year that Baptist Health has received this honor.
The Ethisphere Institute is the global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices. The World’s Most Ethical Companies designation recognizes those organizations that have had a material impact on the way business is conducted by fostering a culture of ethics and transparency at every level of the company.
“We are most proud to maintain a culture of integrity and high ethical standards across our organization,” said Brian E. Keeley, president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health. “We are committed to doing the right thing for our employees, our patients and the communities we serve.”
Baptist Health’s focus on ethical behavior includes a detailed code of ethics covering standards and values and outlining specific regulations and procedures, a strict conflict of interest policy and a vendor relations policy. It has a Corporate Compliance Program, in place for 17 years, with a chief compliance officer who reports directly to the board of directors.
“The World’s Most Ethical Companies embrace the correlation between ethical business practice and improved company performance. These companies use ethics as a means to further define their industry leadership and understand that creating an ethical culture and earning the World’s Most Ethical Companies recognition involves more than just an outward facing message or a handful of senior executives saying the right thing,” said Ethisphere’s Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Erblich. “Earning this recognition involves the collective action of a global workforce from the top down. We congratulate everyone at Baptist Health South Florida for this extraordinary achievement.”
The World’s Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient™ (EQ) framework developed over years of research to provide a means to assess an organization’s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. The EQ framework and methodology is determined, vetted and refined by the expert advice and insights gleaned from Ethisphere’s network of thought leaders and from the World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel.
Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (35%), corporate citizenship and responsibility (20%), culture of ethics (20%), governance (15%) and leadership, innovation and reputation (10%).
