M. Beatriz Currier, M.D., joins the executive leadership of Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida as director of Cancer Patient Support Services. In this role, Dr. Currier will lead a multi-specialty cancer support services team comprised of physicians who specialize in psychiatry, integrative medicine, cancer rehabilitation and pain management, as well as a comprehensive team of interdisciplinary clinicians who will address the psychosocial and physical well-being of cancer patients.

“We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Dr. Currier’s qualifications join us,” said Leonard Kalman, M.D., deputy director and chief clinical officer of Miami Cancer Institute. “A Board-certified psychosomatic psychiatrist, Dr. Currier is one of the few physicians in the country to have already built and led a similar program to the one she will develop at Miami Cancer Institute. Dr. Currier earned her medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa. She completed a general psychiatry residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center and completed a clinical fellowship in psychosomatic medicine at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

A Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with a subspecialty certification in psychosomatic medicine, Dr. Currier is published widely in the academic press and is a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. She has served as a principal investigator on numerous pharmaceutical studies.

Prior to joining Miami Cancer Institute, Dr. Currier was medical director of Sylvester Oncology Support Services, medical director of the Courtelis Center for Psychosocial Oncology and chief of Clinical Psychiatry Services at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. She also served as division chief of Psychosomatic Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

World-Renowned Expert to Oversee South Florida’s First and Only Proton Therapy Center

Minesh Mehta, M.D., a widely renowned expert in radiation oncology, proton therapy and cancer research joins the executive leadership of Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida as deputy director and chief of radiation oncology. Dr. Mehta will position Miami Cancer Institute’s proton therapy center—the only one of its kind in South Florida and one of fewer than two dozen of its kind in the United States—as the region’s top destination for this leading-edge treatment.

Dr. Mehta comes to Baptist Health from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he served as medical director of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center in Baltimore—the area’s first proton treatment center, which he helped to launch. Dr. Mehta was also the University’s associate director of clinical research in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Prior to his time at Maryland, Dr. Mehta held major academic, research and administrative leadership positions at Northwestern University in Chicago, and University of Wisconsin, in Madison, WI.

Board certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology, Dr. Mehta graduated with the highest honors from the University of Zambia School of Medicine. He completed a residency at the University of Wisconsin, where he was chief resident in radiation oncology. Later, he was appointed chairman of the medical school’s Department of Human Oncology and led research studies, technology development and expansion at the University of Wisconsin Cancer Center. He also headed its brain tumor program for more than 15 years, leading to his national leadership role in clinical trials research within national co-operative groups such as NRG Oncology, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, North American Brain Tumor Consortium, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, Children’s Cooperative Group, etc.

At the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, Dr. Mehta was co-director of the Radiation Oncology Residency Training Program, mentoring many young physicians who have gone on to become prominent leaders in the field. He has designed and led numerous national and international clinical studies, receiving NIH and NCI grants and winning several honors, many for his research in brain and central nervous system tumors.

In March of 2015, Baptist Health signed an agreement with IBA, the world’s leading provider of proton therapy solutions for the treatment of cancer, to bring the region’s first and only proton therapy to Miami Cancer Institute’s spectacular new $430 million facility, opening in 2016 and located on the Baptist Hospital of Miami campus. The sophisticated treatment destroys cancer cells with precisely targeted doses of radiation, sparing healthy tissue and resulting in fewer side effects than traditional radiation therapies. Mariners Hospital now offers one of the most advanced mammography tools available — 3-D mammography, also known as breast tomosynthesis — making it the only Keys facility to offer this latest technology.

“Patients experience little difference between a conventional 2-D mammogram and 3-D imaging,” said radiologist Michael Silberman, M.D., one of the radiologists who reads mammograms at Mariners.  “The exam takes only a few seconds longer, and the positioning is the same.  The real difference is in the information available to the doctor.

“The 3-D technology gives doctors a clearer view of breast tissue,” he said. “The 3-D mammogram unit takes 25 images in slices through the breast, much like a CT scan, making it less likely cancer will be hidden behind other tissue.”
With conventional mammography, the radiologist views the breast tissue in a flat image.  Sometimes breast tissue appears overlapped, making it difficult to see all the individual structures and making normal breast tissue look abnormal.  Three-D mammography virtually eliminates these challenges and allows the radiologist to better see the different structures as well as the location, size and shape of any abnormal tissue, such as smaller, more invasive cancers.

Dr. Silberman believes the greatest benefit provided by 3-D mammography is the reduction in the number of patients called back for additional testing.  In the past, if the radiologist saw an area that was questionable, the patient would be asked to return for additional imaging. Now when the breast tissue can be seen in smaller, thinner sections, a second look is frequently unnecessary.  Three-D mammography has been shown to lower recall rates by 17 to 40 percent, saving patients the anxiety and expense of having additional tests.

He noted that some healthcare professionals say there is a risk associated with the radiation dosage in a 3-D mammogram.  “But the dosages for a traditional and 3-D test are so very close that any risk is outweighed by the benefits.

“Patients should definitely pose the question to their doctors.  Ask if a 3-D mammogram would be beneficial for them. Based on the denseness of a woman’s breast, the doctor will be able to answer that question.”

Leonard Kalman, M.D., joins the executive leadership of Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida as deputy medical director and chief medical officer. Dr. Kalman plays a critical role in supporting the overall mission and vision of the Cancer Institute, and in defining its clinical components. He is involved in the recruitment of faculty and staff, and is working with the operational team to create a multidisciplinary model of care combined with an unsurpassed patient experience.

Following the completion of his medical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in 1982, Dr. Kalman became a practicing community medical oncologist, and joined the staffs of Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital. As the practice grew under his leadership, he eventually served as the Chairman of the Board of Managers of what became Advanced Medical Specialties (AMS), a large diversified oncology practice in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. As chairman, he led AMS’ strategic planning, quality and growth initiatives. As of December 2014, the physicians and employees of AMS joined Baptist Health as the founding oncologists of Miami Cancer Institute.

Michele Ryder, R.N., has been named chief operating officer/chief nursing officer for Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida. In this role, Ms. Ryder provides leadership and support for the Cancer Institute’s business and nursing operations along the patient care continuum, including the Infusion suites, multidisciplinary clinics, radiation oncology and ancillary services.

Ms. Ryder’s extensive professional background encompasses over 37 years in both patient care and executive positions. She is a clinical expert in hospital operations and has been responsible for the growth of the renowned neuroscience and surgical programs at Baptist Hospital of Miami, where she began her career 29 years ago in surgery and the post-anesthesia care unit.

Jeff Boyd, Ph.D., a renowned expert in cancer research and genetic testing, joins the executive leadership of Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida as director of translational research and genomic medicine. In this capacity, Dr. Boyd will play a critical role in positioning Miami Cancer Institute’s Center for Genomic Medicine as an international leader for highly personalized genetic analyses tailored to patients’ individual needs.

Dr. Boyd was most recently senior vice president for Molecular Medicine, executive director of the Cancer Genome Institute and the Robert C. Young, M.D., Chair in Cancer Research at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, where he also maintained a research laboratory. Previously, he served as attending biologist and director of the Diagnostic Molecular Genetics Laboratory and the Gynecology and Breast Research Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

The event, emceed by Don Bailey Jr., will feature keynote speaker Charlie Ward, the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner and two-sport standout at Florida State University as a quarterback in football and point guard in basketball. Ward subsequently led the FSU Seminoles to their first-ever National Championship under legendary Coach Bobby Bowden. Though undrafted by the NFL in 1994, he became a first-round draft pick of the New York Knicks, helping them reach the playoffs for six straight years. Today he holds the distinction of being the only Heisman winner to play in the NBA. He played 11 seasons in the NBA with New York, San Antonio and Houston, then served as an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets for two years.

In addition, Dennis Hickey, the Miami Dolphins general manager, will also make remarks. Hickey is responsible for football operations and administration, including directing the college and pro personnel departments. He directs all scouting efforts involving the college draft, free agency, the Canadian Football League and personnel of the other 31 NFL teams. He joined the Dolphins after spending 18 years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including three seasons as the team’s director of player personnel.
