Baptist Health South Florida Acquires the First Acuson Sequoia Systems Enabling Physicians to Scan at Greater Depths

Malvern, PA – September 12, 2018 – Siemens Healthineers has announced the first global installation of its newest ultrasound system, the Acuson Sequoia, at Baptist Health South Florida. With ten facilities and four “centers of excellence” in the South Florida region, Baptist Health South Florida purchased numerous Acuson Sequoia systems in order to enhance its imaging capabilities within the scope of gastroenterology, primary care, and bariatric specialties. With its powerful architecture and innovative features, the new Acuson Sequoia expands precision medicine by enabling high-resolution imaging that adapts to patients’ size and personal physical characteristics, contributing to more confident diagnosis.

“The Acuson Sequoia enables our customers to image patients, regardless of size or body composition, with consistency and clarity,” says David Pacitti, President and Head of the Americas for Siemens Healthineers. “Without sacrificing image quality and potentially reducing the need for repeat scans and unclear diagnoses, the Acuson Sequoia will allow Baptist Health South Florida to underscore its commitment to clinical and service excellence in its community by improving the experiences of the patients it serves.”

Siemens Healthineers built the entirely new Acuson Sequoia system to adapt to the “BioAcoustic Variations” of each patient, characteristics that include tissue density, stiffness, and absorption. With its new Deep Abdominal Transducer (DAX), a new high-powered architecture, and innovative updates to elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound, the new Acuson Sequoia produces penetration up to 40cm without image quality degradation often caused by attenuating echo signals, an industry first.

The Acuson Sequoia also improves the user experience by introducing user-friendly features, such as gesture detecting transducers, and a new ergonomically designed InTune transducer family that reduces operator stress while increasing comfort. A unique new capability among diagnostic ultrasound systems, “UltraArt” provides several image choices automatically generated with a user’s preferred image parameter settings.

The Acuson Sequoia’s innovative features improve image quality, reduce variability, and enhance workflow to personalize medicine and improve patient experiences.

Miami Cancer Institute Names Govindarajan Narayanan, M.D., Chief Of Interventional Oncology

Dr. Narayanan HeadshotMIAMI, FL — September 4, 2018 — Renowned interventional radiologist Govindarajan Narayanan, M.D., has joined the clinical teams at two of Baptist Health South Florida’s premiere service lines – Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute, the area’s largest and most comprehensive cardiovascular facility, and Miami Cancer Institute, a next-generation cancer center and Florida’s only member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Alliance, where he has been named Chief of Interventional Oncology.

Dr. Narayanan brings a wealth of academic, clinical and research expertise. He comes to Baptist Health from the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, where he was the founding chair of the Department of Interventional Radiology and held the titles of Professor of Interventional Radiology and Professor of Urology. A member of numerous professional and honorary organizations, he is also a pioneer in his field, developing the technique of percutaneous irreversible electroporation (IRE) of the pancreas. In his new role, Dr. Narayanan will lead Miami Cancer Institute’s division of Interventional Oncology, which has become an essential component of its comprehensive, multidisciplinary model of oncologic care.

“The appointment of Dr. Narayanan to this important, clinical leadership role is a testament to the benefits of minimally invasive surgical techniques and to our dedication to collaborative, multidisciplinary cancer care,” said Michael J. Zinner, M.D., founding CEO and executive medical director of Miami Cancer Institute. “Dr. Narayanan is among the best in his field, having pioneered many of the specialized clinical applications in interventional radiology that are used today. He will work in close coordination with care teams at both Institutes to plan and deliver personalized treatments that profoundly impact outcomes.”

Dr. Narayanan’s discipline includes residency training in nuclear medicine at Methodist Hospital of Brooklyn and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, as well as a residency in diagnostic radiology at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. His fellowship years encompassed training in interventional radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and Stony Brook University Hospital in New York. Dr. Narayanan is board-certified in diagnostic radiology and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in interventional radiology.

Dr. Narayanan’s primary clinical research interests include pancreatic, liver and colon cancer. He is widely published in such prestigious medical journals as Cancer, Journal of Vascular and Interventional Oncology and Cardiovascular & Interventional Radiology and serves as a reviewer and editor for several scientific publications. His published work on Percutaneous IRE of the pancreas was honored as a distinguished study of the year at the 2018 Society of Interventional Radiology Annual meeting. He also is an invited faculty member and speaker at several national and international scientific meetings.

Highly skilled interventional radiologists such as Dr. Narayanan are uniquely qualified to diagnose cancer and to treat the disease utilizing targeted, minimally invasive procedures performed under image guidance. The scope of interventional oncologic interventions includes tumor ablation, chemoembolization and radioembolization. These advanced interventions also can be used to manage pain and alleviate a variety of other cancer associated symptoms. Because incisions are small and the procedures are quick and precise, side effects and recovery time are minimal.

Baptist Health Opens Its Doors In Miami Beach

Baptist Health Miami Beach Opening_Exterior 1MIAMI BEACH – July 16, 2018 – Baptist Health South Florida today inaugurated the much-anticipated South Beach urgent care, diagnostic and outpatient center on Alton Road. The four-story, 60,000-square-foot wellness and medical complex brings a new level of service and accessibility to health care in the southern part of Miami Beach.

“The Miami Beach facility epitomizes the health care delivery model of the future,” said Ana Lopez-Blazquez, executive vice president and chief strategy & transformation officer. “It brings primary care, urgent care, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, physical therapy and other services to where people live.”

Baptist Health now has more than 50 outpatient centers offering a broad spectrum of health care services throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The outpatient center at 709 Alton Road has an urgent care center for both adults and children that is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The primary care component has offices for doctors, while the endoscopy center has various rooms, and the diagnostic imaging center contains services for CT and MRI scans, nuclear medicine, X-ray and ultrasound. Additionally, Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute has a location for physical therapy for orthopedic injuries.

“The center is a culmination of many years of effort by Baptist Health South Florida, our doctors and staff, and community supporters who recognized the need for a modern facility in the southern part of Miami Beach,” added Lopez-Blazquez.

In addition to the medical facilities, the building contains a Community Resource Center for Miami Beach residents and community groups, retail space on the ground floor, two stories of parking and a rooftop terrace with a garden.

The center, designed by architecture firm Perkins+Will and developed by Russell Galbut’s Crescent Heights Development, was approved by The Miami Beach city commission in July 2015.
