Baptist Health South Florida Offers Healthcare Practitioners Free Course On Prescribing Controlled Substances

Board-approved course meets new Florida relicensure requirement for allopathic and osteopathic physicians

CMECoral Gables, FL – October 2, 2018 – Baptist Health South Florida, the largest not-for-profit healthcare organization in South Florida, is now providing a free online course called Prescribing Controlled Substances, which meets Florida’s new, mandatory requirement for physician education on controlled substances. In an effort to reduce addiction and the number of deaths due to opioids and other controlled substances, the legislature passed The Controlled Substances Bill (HB 21) that requires all Florida healthcare practitioners registered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to prescribe controlled substances to complete a continuing education course by Jan. 31, 2019, and at each subsequent licensure renewal.

Baptist Health’s 2-hour Prescribing Controlled Substances course, which is approved by the Florida Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine, is available at Compliance.BaptistHealth.net (select Prescribing Controlled Substances under course title). The course is for all licensed allopathic and osteopathic physicians, including physicians with a limited license, temporary certificate holders and residents.

Language in the HB 21 bill stated that only a statewide physician association could offer the course, however Baptist Health’s Continuing Medical Education (CME) department was successful in securing approval from the Florida Board of Medicine to offer the course by demonstrating that physicians across the state look to Baptist Health for education that improves practice efficiencies, delivery of care and patient outcomes.

“We are very proud to offer our new course about this critical topic to our medical community across the state in order to help make a difference in patients’ health,” said Bernie Fernandez Jr., M.D., CEO of Baptist Health Medical Group. “This is part of our organization’s commitment to offering high-quality continuing medical education to our medical staff and other physicians who are lifelong learners.”

Since 1992, Baptist Health’s CME program has been nationally accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and has been awarded Accreditation with Commendation for the past three reaccreditation cycles. Baptist Health offers nearly 300 CME/CE activities annually, and its CME Online Learning Program includes more than 150 courses online, with 23,000 learners associated with the Baptist Health CME Portal from 37 counties in Florida. All of Baptist Health’s CME Online Learning Program courses are free of charge.

MRI-Guided Radiation Therapy Aims to Prolong Survival and Reduce Complications for the Most Challenging Cancers

Leading Radiation Oncology Experts Convene to Discuss Future of Radiation Therapy

CLEVELAND, OH – Oct. 1, 2018 – Leading oncology experts from around the world met to discuss the integration of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with radiation therapy and its potential to extend life expectancy and reduce common side effects in many cancer patients. ViewRay, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRAY), maker of MRIdian®, the world’s first and only FDA-cleared, MRI-guided radiation therapy system, and Miami Cancer Institute, co-hosted experts from research hospitals at the cutting-edge of cancer treatment at the September 28 symposium and panel discussion.

Presenters and panel participants included Minesh Mehta, M.D., chief of radiation oncology, and Michael Chuong, M.D., director of radiation oncology clinical research and education, at Miami Cancer Institute, a part of Baptist Health South Florida, Michael Bassetti, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of radiation oncology at University of Wisconsin, Carbone Cancer Center and Raymond Wynn, M.D., FACR, professor and vice chair of network operations in the department of radiation oncology at Loyola University Medical Center.

“Seldom do we see this much excitement around a technology,” Mehta said. “For the first time, we’re able to see high-contrast soft tissue images that clearly delineate tumors from the surrounding healthy organs. This allows us to deliver radiation more precisely, and in some cases, may even allow us to increase the radiation dose to more aggressively fight the cancer.”

“MRIdian has taken much of the guesswork out of radiation therapy. Its visualization and adaptive abilities are of benefit in treating many types of cancer, but they are especially vital when treating tumors that move significantly during treatment, such as tumors in the lung or liver. We can now watch the changes within the body in real-time and respond accordingly,” Chuong said. “This leads to more accurate treatment of the tumor and minimizes irradiation of nearby normal tissues, potentially reducing the side effects.”

“This technology is a true game-changer, and we are honored to be the first center in Illinois and first community practice nationwide to offer it to our patients,” Wynn said. “MRI-guided radiation therapy enables us to deliver more accurate and effective radiation doses, in fewer sessions, while sparing healthy tissue. This now makes what was science-fiction a science-reality.”

“Seeing the tumor and surrounding healthy tissues and organs in great detail allows us to adapt the treatment in order to improve dosing and accuracy,” Bassetti said. “Early results in pancreatic cancer suggest that the ability to deliver higher radiation doses with adaptive MRI-guided radiation therapy may improve patient survival while maintaining low toxicity. We look forward to further investigating these promising outcomes.”

ViewRay has announced the launch of a multi-center prospective clinical trial in pancreatic cancer to investigate the robustness of encouraging early data in patients treated with MRI-guided radiation therapy. The study aims to track patient survival and quality of life over a 5-year period. The trial is expected to open enrollment in the coming weeks.

ViewRay’s MRIdian system has been installed at more than 15 leading research hospitals around the world, where it is being used to treat a wide variety of solid tumors and is the focus of numerous ongoing clinical trials. It has been recognized and studied in more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and hundreds of scientific meeting abstracts and presentations. More than 3,000 patients have been treated with MRIdian. Albert H. Nahmad Named Chair of Board of Directors at Miami Cancer Institute

Al Nahmad_headshotMIAMI, FL — September 17, 2018 — Miami Cancer Institute, a next-generation cancer treatment destination and Florida’s only member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Alliance, proudly announced today that Albert H. Nahmad has been named chair of the Institute’s Board of Directors. He succeeds S. Lawrence “Larry” Kahn III, the Institute’s visionary, founding Board chair and founder of Coral Gables-based Lowell Homes, who recently passed away following a long battle with lymphoma. Mr. Nahmad shares Mr. Kahn’s passion for philanthropy and a desire to continue to help elevate Miami Cancer Institute as a cancer treatment destination both here in Miami and in neighboring regions.

“It is an honor to have Mr. Nahmad lead our Board of Directors,” said Michael J. Zinner, M.D., Miami Cancer Institute’s Chief Executive Officer and Executive Medical Director. “He brings knowledge of our community and an unwavering commitment to philanthropy, compounded by his desire to continue to help elevate the Miami Cancer Institute as a cancer treatment destination both here in Miami and in neighboring regions.”

Since 1973, Mr. Nahmad has served as board chair and CEO of Watsco, Inc., an NYSE company based in Coconut Grove. At the beginning of his tenure, Watsco had revenues of $5 million and a market capitalization of less than $5 million. Under his strategic leadership, Watsco has become the largest distributor of air conditioning, heating and refrigeration products with revenues of over $4.5 billion and a market capitalization of nearly $7 billion.

Watsco’s success has been achieved with a conservative, long-term focus and an entrepreneurial spirit. The company operates from 568 locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico and also serves markets in Latin America and the Caribbean. He holds an M.S. in Industrial Administration from Purdue University and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Mexico. He maintains an active role in a number of charitable organizations in South Florida.

In his role as chair, Mr. Nahmad sits with current board members Phil Conway, secretary; Ronald A. Shuffield, treasurer; and Bruce Beal, John Dasburg, John Haley, Michele Kessler, Patrick P. Lee, Rudy Kranys, and the Rev. Dr. William White.
