Mariners Hospital recognizes Extraordinary Nurse with the Daisy Award

Tavernier, FL – January 20, 2020 – Mariners Hospital is proud to present Christine Helms, R.N., with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for demonstrating compassion and patient- and family-centered care, which embody the meaning of the DAISY Award and mission of Baptist Health South Florida.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The nursing recognition program was launched in 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. The DAISY Foundation and Award were created by his family as an expression of gratitude for the nursing care he received during his illness.

Ms. Helms was nominated by a patient and family who visited the Mariners Hospital Emergency Department while on vacation in the Keys. In a letter to the hospital, the family praised Ms. Helms for explaining what was happening with their loved one in a private, thoughtful and detailed manner. The compassionate nurse then went above and beyond and shared her personal contact information in case they needed additional assistance.

The DAISY Award is presented twice a year at Mariners Hospital and the recipient is chosen by the hospital’s Professional Development Council.
