First Daisy Award presented to deserving nurse at Fishermen’s Community Hospital

Marathon, FL – January 27, 2020 – Fishermen’s Community Hospital is proud to present  Cheryl Signor, R.N., nursing supervisor, with its first DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for demonstrating compassion and patient-centered care, which embody the meaning of the DAISY Award and mission of Baptist Health.

Ms. Signor was nominated by a patient who was involved in a head-on collision when she was 34 weeks pregnant. Ms. Signor saw the accident occur a few cars in front of her own and, without a second thought, jumped into action by entering the passenger side of the vehicle. She immediately introduced herself and assured the patient that “we are going to get through this.” The highly skilled nurse focused on keeping the expectant mother calm while assessing for signs of labor. Once out of the vehicle, Ms. Signor remained by the patient’s side in the ambulance until she was treated and airlifted from the scene.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The nursing recognition program was launched in 1999 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease. The DAISY Foundation and Award were created by his family as an expression of gratitude for the nursing care he received during his illness.

The DAISY Award is presented twice a year at Fishermen’s Community Hospital and the recipient is chosen by the hospital’s Professional Development Council.
