Bernie Fernandez, Chief of Baptist Health Medical Group, to Assist President’s Commission on White House Fellowships

Bernardo Fernandez, M.D.MIAMI – March 24, 2017 – Bernie Fernandez, M.D., chief executive officer of Baptist Health Medical Group, will join a panel of civic leaders to interview local candidates vying for the prestigious President’s Commission on White House Fellowship.

“It is truly an honor to participate in the selection process for the President’s Commission on White House Fellowship and, by doing so, helping to identify those in our community with the potential to become our public leaders of the future,” Dr. Fernandez said.

The non-partisan White House Fellows was founded in 1964 by Lyndon Johnson with the goal to encourage active citizenship by members of the private sector. As one of America’s most prestigious programs for leadership and public service, the competitive fellowships sponsor individuals to spend a year as a full-time, paid Fellow to senior White House staff, cabinet secretaries and other top-ranking government officials. National finalists advance through a highly competitive selection process, including a comprehensive written application and regional interviews with civic leaders in eight cities.

Dr. Fernandez, an internist who specializes in vascular medicine, leads a network of more than 140 employed physicians in numerous Baptist Health Medical Group locations. Active in the South Florida community, Dr. Fernandez serves on numerous boards, including the Orange Bowl Committee, Broward Workshop, Health Network Foundation, as well as the advisory board of the University of Miami School of Business Administration’s Programs and Center in Health Sector Management and Policy. He serves on the faculty of Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Dr. Fernandez is a member of the Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter of the World Presidents’ Organization (WPO), the 2014 American Heart Association Heart Walk Executive Leadership Board and the South Florida Hospital and Healthcare Association Board.
