Bernardo Fernandez, M.D.

Bernardo “Bernie” Fernandez, M.D., is the CEO of Baptist Health Medical Group, a network of more than 180 physicians in multiple specialties closely aligned with Baptist Health South Florida. It includes primary care practices from Miami Beach to the Upper Keys, providing patients with a seamless and comprehensive approach to primary care.

Prior to joining Baptist Health South Florida, Dr. Fernandez, an internist who specializes in vascular medicine, served as president of Cleveland Clinic Florida, a world-renowned academic medical center with locations in Weston and West Palm Beach, Florida. In June 2013, he was appointed to the Florida Board of Medicine by Governor Rick Scott. Most recently, Dr. Fernandez was elected vice chairman of the Florida Board of Medicine.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Dr. Fernandez received his medical degree from the Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and completed his internal medicine residency and vascular medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He is Board-certified by the American Board of Vascular Medicine and a Fellow of the Society of Vascular Medicine and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Fernandez holds an MBA from the University of Miami School of Business and is also a graduate of the Wharton School of Business’ Executive Development Program.

Active in the South Florida community, Dr. Fernandez serves on the board of directors for Broward Workshop and the Orange Bowl Committee. He is also on the board of the Health Network Foundation, as well as the advisory board of the University of Miami School of Business Administration’s Programs and Center in Health Sector Management and Policy. In 2011, he was invited to serve on the selection panel for the White House Fellows program, one of America’s most prestigious programs for leadership and public service. Dr. Fernandez is a member of the Miami/Fort Lauderdale chapter of the World Presidents’ Organization (WPO), the 2014 American Heart Association Heart Walk Executive Leadership Board and the South Florida Hospital and Healthcare Association Board.

Dr. Fernandez and his wife, Dr. Rosa Monte Fernandez, a pediatrician, reside in Davie and have two children.
