Chief Executive Officer, Doctors Hospital and Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute; Chief Academic Affiliation Officer
Javier Hernandez-Lichtl is the CEO of Doctors Hospital and Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. He also serves as Baptist Health’s Chief Academic Officer, leading the Center for Advancement of Learning, including all nursing, pharmacy, allied health and Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs.
Javier has been an executive with Baptist Health South Florida for more than 30 years, most recently serving as CEO of West Kendall Baptist Hospital. Almost a decade ago, Javier assembled and led the team that opened West Kendall Baptist Hospital, Miami-Dade County’s first new hospital in more than 35 years. Under Javier’s leadership, West Kendall Baptist Hospital’s volume and financial performance outpaced original projections, and it has been growing ever since. That extraordinary volume growth resulted in Baptist Health’s planned investment of close to $90 million in a new 4-story clinical expansion. Additionally, Javier’s track record for being a builder and innovator has led to West Kendall Baptist Hospital earning national accolades for quality, safety and service.
West Kendall Baptist Hospital also has the distinction of being the first academic medical facility in Baptist Health, closely linked with Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Javier was instrumental in attaining 10-year accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for the Family Medicine Residency Program at the hospital. West Kendall Baptist Hospital also achieved the prestigious National Magnet Designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), becoming one of the fastest new hospitals to achieve this prestigious designation.
With Javier’s vision, West Kendall Baptist Hospital has become both a community hub and a center for innovation. The hospital is the site of the first global installation of the GE Revolution CT Scanner. This cutting-edge technology was used as part of the Miami Heart Study, headquartered at West Kendall Baptist Hospital, which is aimed at identifying new relationships between risk factors, genetics and lifestyle behaviors and cardiovascular disease. In addition, the Healthy Hub located in the hospital’s lobby offers preventative healthcare helping our community to take simple steps toward well-being.
Javier began his career at Baptist Health as an administrative resident at Baptist Hospital of Miami and advanced to Vice President of Clinical Services. In addition to his leadership at West Kendall Baptist Hospital, he has also served as CEO of Baptist Outpatient Services & Baptist Health Enterprises, Chief Administrative Officer for Baptist Health, and CEO of South Miami Hospital.
Javier’s dedication to the South Florida Community encompasses not only healthcare, but also education and the arts. He currently serves on the Board of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and FIU’s Frost Art Museum. He has previously served on the United Way of Miami-Dade Board, the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board and the Adrienne Arsht Center Board of Directors. In addition, he chaired the Florida Sterling Council and Miami International University of Art & Design Board.
Among Javier’s many accomplishments and accolades are: the Good Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the Power Leader of the Year Award from Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Humanitarian of the Year from March of Dimes and Hispanic Business Magazine’s “Top 50 Most Influential Hispanics” in the U.S. in 2014. In addition, he is a member of Leadership Florida Class XXIII and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
