Tips for Keeping Your Brain Healthy (VIDEO)

Omega-3s, the fatty acids found in certain fish and abundantly marketed and sold as supplements, may not be as effective in preventing cognitive decline. A study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), concluded that “supplementation had no statistically significant effect on cognitive function.”

Sergio Jaramillo, M.D. [1], a neurologist at Baptist Hospital, says the jury might still be out on these supplements, but insists on including fish as part of a healthy diet. The oils found in fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, lake trout, sardines and albacore tuna have been proven to be beneficial for healthy brain function.

Dr. Jaramillo recommends a Mediterranean-style diet, rich in fish, olive oil, nuts and legumes, coupled with physical activity, as a “general recipe for good health.” He also encourages reading or watching something that interests you, and then having a discussion about it, as a way to keep your cognitive function sharp.
